Change, Not Charity. The OUT Fund supports organizing projects within lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) communities. The OUT Fund prioritizes groups that use organizing in their pursuit of a broader vision of progressive social change — one which includes race, class, gender and sexuality. OUT takes a unique multi-issue approach, which allows it to support organizations that address the intersection of multiple rights violations in a time when homophobia is used increasingly as a wedge to undermine the struggle for a range of social justice issues.
The OUT Fund was established in 1991 with an initial gift of $500,000 by David Pillsbury Becker.
Alexander John Goodrum, an activist and leader in the transgender community, was a valued member of the OUT Fund panel. In this role, Alexander brought us a clearer understanding of the importance of including transgender issues in all of our grantmaking. He earned tremendous admiration from panel members and staff for his ability and desire to learn as well as educate and for incorporating broad political perspectives into a viable progressive vision.
As a prominent transgender black man, Alexander’s leadership had a profound impact on queer people of color and on the community as a whole. He gave us the benefit of his knowledge, experience, passion, practicality and great humor, bringing all of who he was to his work, and inspiring others to do the same. One grantee will be named the recipient of the Alexander John Goodrum Memorial Grant in his honor.
