We don’t just give grants, we are committed to helping activists remain true to their radical missions and goals. In 1988 (Reaganomics, need we say more?) during a swing to the right in American politics, we noticed that the grant applications we received from lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organizations lacked a strong activist bent. so we sponsored a conference of groups working on LGBT issues to get a better sense of what was going on . The conference revealed that in response to a conservative climate, progressive groups had “toned down” their radical politics to increase their attractiveness to funders. The conference helped to connect these organizations with progressive grantmakers eager to fund their radical organizing work. And here we are, two decades later, with gay marriage on the books in six states.
